Patient-friendly definitions for clinical trial and medical terms used on TrialConnect. Click any condition or term throughout the app to jump to its definition here.
A research study that tests how well new medical approaches work in people. These can include new drugs, vaccines, devices, or ways to detect, diagnose, prevent, or treat disease. Clinical trials are the primary way researchers find out if a new treatment is safe and effective.
The specific conditions a participant must have in order to join a clinical trial. These might include age range, type of diagnosis, previous treatments, or overall health status.
Conditions that prevent someone from joining a trial. These are in place to protect patient safety and ensure reliable trial data.
A 0–10 scale used to measure how hard physical activity feels. 0 = complete rest, 10 = maximum effort. Used in journal entries to track physical activity levels during trial participation.
The first stage of testing in humans. Usually involves a small group (20–80 people) to evaluate safety, determine a safe dosage range, and identify side effects.
Tests whether a drug or treatment works in a larger group of people (100–300), while continuing to evaluate safety.
A large-scale study (1,000–3,000+ people) comparing the new treatment with the current standard treatment. Usually needed before a drug can be approved.
The process by which a person learns the key facts about a clinical trial before deciding whether to participate. It is an ongoing process, not just a single signed form.
An independent committee that reviews and monitors clinical research involving humans. The IRB's main purpose is to protect the rights and welfare of research participants.
A company that provides research services to pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and medical device companies. CROs manage the logistics and operations of clinical trials on behalf of sponsors.
The branch of medicine focused on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer. Oncology trials often test new cancer therapies, immunotherapies, or targeted drug treatments.
The branch of medicine dealing with disorders of the heart and blood vessels, including conditions such as heart failure, arrhythmia, and coronary artery disease.
Diseases caused by changes (mutations) in one or more genes. These are often rare, affecting fewer than 200,000 people in the US. Examples include cystic fibrosis, Huntington's disease, and sickle cell anemia.
On TrialConnect, anonymous mode means your name and personal details are never visible on the platform. You are identified only by your Anonymous ID (e.g., P001). Recommended for most users.
Within TrialConnect, V.I (Virtual Intelligence) refers to the platform's rule-based and data-driven matching systems that work behind the scenes to connect the right patients, physicians, and sites to the right clinical trials — without requiring a human to manually review every combination.
V.I is distinct from general-purpose Artificial Intelligence. It operates within a defined set of clinical and regulatory rules, using structured data you provide (age, diagnosis, location, medications, physician specialty) to generate scored recommendations. In Phase 2, V.I matching will incorporate additional signals such as physician achievement history and site performance metrics. All V.I decisions are logged and auditable by platform administrators.
TrialConnect's intelligent matching feature that uses your registered profile (age, diagnoses, location) to recommend the most suitable clinical trials for your situation. Currently rule-based; V.I-enhanced matching coming in Phase 2.
